The Society of Economic Journalists- Nepal (SEJON) is an association of economic/financial journalists who are involved with various electronic and print media across the country.
Established in 1998 by a group of journalists, SEJON has been continuously working with an objective of promoting the participation of mass media in raising public awareness in socio-economic and developmental issues. SEJON as a non-profit organisation is committed to institutionalise professional journalism in the country by enhancing the capacity of emerging economic journalists. Journalism in Nepal has grown robustly with the restoration of multiparty democracy in 1990 in pursuance with rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Nepal.
Economic (business) journalism, too, has been growing over the years. Economic journalists have been playing a catalytic role through publishing or broadcasting investigative and development news related to various aspects of the economy, thus making people aware of the national and international economic agenda. Moreover, we have been advocating good governance, healthy competition and inclusiveness both in public and private sector in pursuit of reaping benefits of free market economy and globalisation.
In the context of globalisation, the role of civil society is indispensable for the country's speedy development especially in the developing countries like Nepal . More importantly, economic journalists have a crucial role to play to consolidate the emerging democracy through economic development.
Thus, SEJON came into existence as per the need felt by the policymakers, economists, development planners, donor agencies and private sector, among others. Developing true professionalism in business-economy reporting in accordance with the changed context and promoting people's voice through mass media have been a guiding mentor of SEJON over the years. |
